Pop-ups

Show visitors a pop-up that promotes a competition, a launch or an offer, and decide which of your pop-ups they see first, including the built-in Sign-up Popup that collects email sign-ups.

Where to find it: Marketing → Pop-ups (/admin/marketing/popups). If you can see the list but not the New pop-up button, your role can view marketing but not change it.

Create a pop-up

  1. On Marketing → Pop-ups, click New pop-up (top right). The editor opens as a full page: the form on the left, a live Preview on the right.
  2. Enter a Name. Only you see it; it labels the pop-up in your list.
  3. Build what visitors see under Content. A new pop-up starts with a heading, some text and a button. See Build the content.
  4. Under How it appears, pick a shape:
    • Centred box sits over the page and dims everything behind it. Hardest to miss.
    • Corner card slides in at the bottom corner and leaves the page usable.
    • Bar is a strip along the bottom of the screen. Best for one short line and a button.
  5. Set who sees it, where and when under When and where it shows. See Choose where and when it shows.
  6. Check the Preview. Use the phone and desktop icons above it to check both sizes.
  7. Turn on Switched on if you want it live as soon as you save. New pop-ups start switched off.
  8. Click Create pop-up in the bar at the foot of the page.

You'll see Pop-up created and switched on. or Pop-up created. Switch it on when you are ready. A new pop-up joins the end of your order, so if something else is higher up, visitors may see that first. See Decide the order.

Visitors pick up a new or changed pop-up within about a minute, the next time they open or refresh your site.

Nothing is saved until you click the button

The bar at the foot of the editor tells you where you stand: Not saved yet, Unsaved changes or All changes saved. If you try to leave with unsaved changes, you're warned first. Undo my changes puts an existing pop-up back to how it was when you last saved.

Build the content

The Content card lists your blocks from top to bottom, with a counter such as 3/8 blocks.

  • Add a block: click one of the buttons under Add a block: Heading, Text, Image, Button, Countdown or Competition. It's added at the bottom.
  • Change a block: click it in the list. Its settings open underneath.
  • Reorder: drag a block by its handle (the three lines on the left).
  • Remove: click the bin on the block's row.

A pop-up holds up to 8 blocks, up to 2 buttons and 1 competition card. When you hit a limit, that Add a block button greys out.

What's worth knowing about each block:

  • Heading: choose Large or Small, and the alignment.
  • Text: up to 2,000 characters. You can use **bold**, *italic* and [a link](https://example.com).
  • Image: pick from your Media Library. Fill in Describe the image so visitors using a screen reader know what it shows.
  • Button: set the Button text and the Link. The link must be a page on your site starting with / (for example /competitions/range-rover) or a full https:// address. http:// links are refused. To save typing, click Choose… and pick one of your competitions, or a page (Home and All competitions are at the top of the page list). If the pop-up already has a competition card, click Link to … under the field to point the button at the same competition. Choose a Style (Main, Grey or Outline) and, if it leaves your site, tick Open in a new tab.
  • Countdown: set Count down to, the Label above the clock (untick Show to hide it), and what to show When it reaches zero.
  • Competition: search for a competition and pick it. Live competitions are listed first, with ended ones below. The card shows its title, picture and prize name, and clicking it goes to the competition's page.

Competition cards and countdowns don't update themselves

The card copies the competition's title, picture and prize name as they are when you pick it. It never shows ticket counts or prices. If you change the competition later, pick it again on the card to refresh it. A countdown is also fixed: if you extend a competition, update the countdown's Count down to date by hand.

Promote a competition in two clicks

The quickest way to promote a competition is from the competition itself.

  1. Open the competition from Competitions to reach its edit page.
  2. Click the ⋯ button in the top right (next to View Competition or Preview Competition) and choose Create pop-up. On a phone, the ⋯ button sits in the bar at the foot of the page, next to View. It's only offered while the competition is Active: a draft or cancelled competition has no public page to send visitors to, and an ended one has nothing left to promote.
  3. A new pop-up opens, already filled in with:
    • the competition's title as the Name and the heading
    • a Competition card for it
    • a Countdown to its end date
    • a View competition button linking to it
    • Stop showing set to the competition's end date, so the pop-up stops when the competition does
  4. Change anything you like, turn on Switched on, and click Create pop-up.

It's set to show on All pages. To show it only on that competition's page, see Choose where and when it shows.

If you extend the competition, the pop-up's Stop showing date and countdown don't move with it. Open the pop-up and update both.

Let Compy write it

Compy, the admin assistant, can write the pop-up for you. His Compy, write this button sits at the top of the Content card, next to the block counter. You only see it if AI is set up on your site and your role includes AI content.

  1. Give the pop-up a Name, add a Competition card, or both. Until there's one of them, Compy is asleep and the button is disabled. The name is what he writes from, so make it say what the pop-up is for, for example "Range Rover weekend push".
  2. Click Compy, write this. The button reads Compy is writing… while he works, and he waves when the draft lands.

Want more say over what he writes? Click the arrow beside the button and choose Give Compy a brief…. Fill in either or both:

  • What's it for? (optional): a sentence or two, for example "Weekend push for the Range Rover, it ends Sunday night".
  • Competition (optional): pick one to build the pop-up around. If your pop-up already has a competition card, it's picked for you.

Then click Draft it.

Either way, Compy fills in the shape under How it appears and the Content, and leaves a short note at the top of the form explaining his choices. He keeps the name you gave it (he only names the pop-up if you hadn't). Your When and where it shows settings are left as they were.

Writing replaces all the blocks already in the pop-up. Nothing is saved or shown to visitors until you click Create pop-up or Save pop-up, so read it through, change what you want, and save when you're happy. If you don't like it, run it again or leave the page without saving.

If Compy says he has written a lot recently, wait a little while and try again.

Choose where and when it shows

All of these are in the When and where it shows card.

  1. Show after: how many seconds a visitor is on your site before it appears (0 to 600). The default is 5 seconds. A pop-up that appears instantly tends to get closed unread. If your site has a Meta or TikTok pixel, pop-ups wait until the visitor has answered the cookie banner, and the seconds count from then.
  2. Pages:
    • All pages: anywhere on your site that allows pop-ups (see the list below).
    • Homepage only.
    • Specific competitions: only on the pages of the competitions you pick (up to 50). It doesn't show on the homepage or the competitions list.
  3. Who sees it: Everyone, Signed-in customers, or Visitors who aren't signed in. Use the last one for "join us" offers, so existing customers aren't asked.
  4. After someone closes it, don't show it again for: choose from 1 hour up to 30 days, or Custom… for a number of hours (up to 8,760, a year). This is remembered separately for each pop-up.
  5. Start showing (optional) and Stop showing (optional): leave both empty to show it until you switch it off. Stop showing must be after start showing.

The badge next to the pop-up's title shows where it stands: Live, Scheduled (switched on, start time not reached), Ended (stop time passed) or Off.

A few rules apply to every pop-up, whatever you set:

  • Never on these pages: checkout, payment and the payment success page (where customers reveal their instant wins), instant-win replays, and the sign-in, register, password, email-verification and unsubscribe pages. If a visitor moves onto one of these while a pop-up is open, it closes.
  • Never for self-excluded customers. A customer with an active self-exclusion sees no pop-ups at all.
  • Clicking through counts as closing. A visitor who clicks the button or competition card isn't shown that pop-up again until its "don't show it again" time has passed.
  • Start and stop use the visitor's device clock. Someone whose clock is wrong may see a pop-up start or stop a little early or late.

Decide the order

Visitors see one pop-up at a time. The list on Marketing → Pop-ups is the order they're tried in: the first one that fits the page the visitor is on, and that they haven't recently closed, is the one they see. The built-in Sign-up Popup takes its turn in the same line.

To change the order: drag a row by its handle (the three lines on the left) to where you want it. The new order saves as soon as you drop it.

When a visitor closes one pop-up, the next in line waits its own Show after delay before appearing. They never get two at once, and they're never shown the same pop-up twice in a visit.

Every pop-up that's switched on gets its turn, so put the one that matters most at the top and keep the list short. If three or more live pop-ups could reach the same visitor on the same page, Compy leaves a tip above the list. To thin it out, switch one off, or narrow its Pages or Who sees it.

Jackpot wins always go first

If a customer has just won your Jackpot, that win pop-up shows before anything in your list.

Switch a pop-up on or off, copy it or delete it

Each row on Marketing → Pop-ups has:

  • The switch in the On column: turns the pop-up on or off straight away. On a phone, it's at the right-hand end of the row.
  • Edit (pencil): opens the editor.
  • Duplicate: makes a copy named "(copy)", switched off, at the end of your order. Handy for a similar promotion, or to show a pop-up again to people who closed it, since a copy counts as a new pop-up.
  • Delete (bin): asks you to confirm. Deleting removes the pop-up and all its figures, and can't be undone. If you might want the numbers later, switch it off instead.

You can have up to 100 pop-ups.

Turn the Sign-up Popup on or off

The Sign-up Popup is the built-in pop-up that invites visitors to join your marketing list, as a plain email form (Standard) or a spin-to-win wheel (Wheel spin). It sits in your Pop-ups list with the note Built in — collects email sign-ups.

  • To turn it on or off: use its switch on the Pop-ups list.
  • To move it up or down the order: drag its row like any other pop-up.
  • To change its wording, style, delay or wheel: click its Edit (pencil) button or its name. This opens its own editor (/admin/marketing/popup), with a Back to Pop-ups link at the top. See Capture sign-ups with the popup.

The Sign-up Popup keeps its own Show after (seconds) and Re-show after (days) settings from that editor. It isn't counted in Views, Clicks or the other figure columns.

If you use Klaviyo, the row reads Replaced by your Klaviyo forms, shows Off, and its switch is greyed out: Klaviyo's own sign-up forms do this job instead. Your other pop-ups keep working as normal. See Using Klaviyo instead.

Style pop-ups with custom CSS

If you use Custom CSS (Settings → Appearance), pop-ups carry stable hooks you can target. The full list is in the Available hooks panel under the CSS editor.

  • To style every pop-up: target [data-comps="popup-card"] for the card and [data-comps="popup-close"] for the close button.
  • To style one layout: add [data-comps-frame="modal"], "corner" or "bar".
  • To style one pop-up: use [data-comps-popup-id="…"] with the pop-up's id, which is the last part of the address when you have it open in the editor. The Sign-up Popup's id is signup.
  • To style one kind of block: target [data-comps="popup-block"] with data-comps-type set to heading, text, image, button, countdown or competition.

For example, to give one pop-up a dark card and a gold heading:

css
[data-comps-popup-id="YOUR-POPUP-ID"] [data-comps="popup-card"] { background: #111; }
[data-comps-popup-id="YOUR-POPUP-ID"] [data-comps-type="heading"] { color: #ffd166; }

Pop-up buttons count as ordinary site buttons, so any rules you have written for [data-comps="button"] apply to them too. To style only the buttons inside pop-ups, use [data-comps="popup"] [data-comps="button"].

Read the figures

Each pop-up's row shows, from the day it was created:

  • Views: how many times it appeared on screen. One visitor seeing it on two visits counts twice.
  • Clicks: how many times someone clicked its button or competition card.
  • Click rate: clicks as a share of views. It shows — if the pop-up has no button or competition card, because there's nothing to click.
  • Orders after click: completed ticket orders placed within 24 hours of the customer clicking that pop-up, with their total value, for example 3 · £42.50. Cancelled orders aren't counted. If a customer clicks two pop-ups, the order goes to the one they clicked last.

The same figures appear under the Switched on switch in the pop-up's editor. New views and clicks show up within about a minute.

Don't add utm_source to pop-up links

Pop-up clicks are tracked for you. A pop-up never changes where a visitor originally came from, so the ad or email that brought them in keeps the credit in your Website Analytics. Adding utm_source= to a pop-up's link would overwrite that, so Compy warns you if you do.

Compy's tips

While you edit, Compy may leave a tip under the Preview, and he may leave one above your list on Marketing → Pop-ups. They're advice only and never stop you saving.

Compy saysWhat it means
"3 live pop-ups on the same pages means a visitor gets them one after another. That usually annoys people."Shown above the list. Three or more live pop-ups (the Sign-up Popup counts) could reach the same visitor on the same page. Switch one off, or narrow its pages or audience.
"This will overwrite where your visitor came from — leave it off, we track pop-up clicks for you."A link in the pop-up contains utm_source=. Remove it.
"Showing instantly tends to get closed unread."Show after is 0 seconds.
"No button, so there's no click rate to measure."There's no button or competition card, so Click rate will show —.

Why isn't my pop-up showing?

Test in a private or incognito browser window. Your normal browser remembers pop-ups you've already closed or clicked, and the ones you've already seen this visit.

Then check, in order:

  • Is it switched on and Live? The badge should say Live, not Off, Scheduled or Ended.
  • Is something higher in the order taking its place? Only one pop-up shows at a time. Yours waits until the visitor closes whatever is above it, so close that one and wait, or drag yours higher.
  • Does the page match? Homepage only won't show on competition pages, and Specific competitions only shows on those competitions' own pages.
  • Does the visitor match? Check Who sees it: a Visitors who aren't signed in pop-up won't show while you're signed in to your site.
  • Have you waited long enough? It appears after the Show after delay, and the delay starts again for the next pop-up after one is closed.
  • Did you close or click it earlier? It stays hidden for its After someone closes it, don't show it again for time. Editing the pop-up doesn't reset this; to show it again to people who closed it, duplicate it and switch the copy on.
  • Is the page one that never shows pop-ups? Checkout, payment, the payment success page and the sign-in and register pages never do.
  • Is the cookie banner still up? If your site has a Meta or TikTok pixel, no pop-up shows until the visitor has answered the cookie banner.
  • Is the visitor self-excluded? Self-excluded customers never see pop-ups.
  • Did you save in the last minute? Give it a minute, then refresh the page.

The Sign-up Popup isn't showing. As above, plus: is Klaviyo connected (the row says Replaced by your Klaviyo forms)? In Wheel spin style, does the wheel have at least one wedge? The Standard form is never shown to signed-in customers who already get your marketing emails. See Capture sign-ups with the popup.

I can't add another button or competition card. A pop-up holds 2 buttons, 1 competition card and 8 blocks in all. Remove one first.

Saving shows a red message in the bar. It names the first problem, for example Block 3: the button needs a page on your site (starting with /) or a full https:// link., and tells you how many more there are. Fix each one and save again.

I don't see Compy, write this. AI isn't set up on your site, or your role doesn't include AI content. If you can see it but it's greyed out, give the pop-up a name or a competition card first.
