Discounts
Run automatic, time-limited sales across many competitions at once, with no code for customers to enter. Set the offer and its calendar window, choose which competitions it covers, and the reduced price shows by itself on the competition cards, the competition page and at checkout.
Where to find it: Admin → Discounts (/admin/discounts). The link only appears if your admin account has the discounts permission.
Find your way around the Discounts list
The list shows 20 discounts per page.
- Search by name or label... matches a discount's internal name or its customer label.
- The status dropdown narrows the list to Active, Draft or Paused.
- Name shows the internal name with the customer label underneath, and a coloured dot for the badge colour. Click the column header to sort.
- Discount shows the value and whether it is a Percentage or a Fixed Amount.
- Window shows the start and end dates. Click the column header to sort by start date.
- Scope shows a blue All competitions pill, or a summary such as "3 competitions" or "2 tags". No scope means the discount is set to specific competitions or tags but none have been picked, so it currently covers nothing.
- Status shows what the discount is doing right now: Active (live), Upcoming (set to Active, window not started), Ended (set to Active, window has passed), Draft or Paused.
Each row has an Edit discount (pencil) and a Delete discount (bin) action. You only see them if your account has write and delete permission.
Create a discount
- Click Create Discount in the top right. A slide-over panel opens, so you keep your place in the list.
- Enter a Name. This is internal only and never shown to customers, for example
Bank Holiday Sale. Up to 100 characters. - Enter a Customer label. This is the badge text customers see on the competition cards, for example
20% OFF. Up to 60 characters. - Optionally set a Badge color. Use the colour swatch or type a hex code such as
#FF5733. Leave it blank for the default grey treatment, or click Clear to reset it. - Choose a Type: Percentage or Fixed amount.
- Enter a Value. A percentage must be between 1 and 99 (type anything higher and the field snaps back to 99). A fixed amount must be greater than £0.
- Set Starts and Ends. These are date and time fields. The discount applies from the start time up to, but not including, the end time.
- Set the Status: Draft (not applied), Active (applies in window) or Paused (temporarily off). New discounts default to Active.
- Under Applies to, choose the scope. See Choose which competitions a discount covers.
- Check the Preview · example on a £10 ticket strip at the foot of the panel. It shows your badge, the discounted price, the £10.00 original struck through, and the saving.
- Click Create Discount. A "Discount created" message confirms it and the panel closes.
The discount starts working the moment its window opens, as long as its status is Active. There is no separate publish step.
Fixed amount versus ticket price
A fixed-amount discount larger than a competition's ticket price makes that competition's tickets free (the price floors at £0). Because one discount can span competitions with different prices, prefer a percentage for broad, mixed-price sales, and keep large fixed amounts for tightly scoped competitions whose prices you know.
Choose which competitions a discount covers
The Applies to section offers three scopes. Pick one:
- All competitions covers every competition on your site.
- Specific competitions covers only the ones you pick.
- Competitions with a tag covers every competition carrying a chosen tag, both now and any competition you tag later.
To pick specific competitions:
- Select Specific competitions.
- Type into Search competitions to add... and tick each competition you want. Your picks appear as chips above the search box.
- Remove a pick with the small x on its chip.
To pick tags:
- Select Competitions with a tag.
- Type into Search tags to add... and click a tag to add it. Tags you have added appear as chips above.
- Remove a tag with the x on its chip.
A discount is scoped one way or the other, never both competitions and tags at the same time. Switching the radio to a different scope replaces the old assignment when you save.
Scope decides only which competitions a discount can cover. It does not decide which discount wins when several cover the same competition. See How overlapping offers are settled.
Set a sale up in advance
You have two ways to prepare a sale before it runs:
- Leave the status on Active and set the Starts date in the future. The discount shows as Upcoming in the list and switches itself on at the start time, then off again at the end time. Nothing else to do.
- Set the status to Draft if you want the discount saved but definitely inert, for example while you are still deciding the value. A Draft never affects pricing, whatever its window says.
Eligibility ignores competition status, so a discount also applies to a Draft competition. That lets you open a draft competition's preview and see exactly what the sale will look like before it goes public.
Pause or stop a sale early
- Open the discount with the Edit discount (pencil) action.
- Change the Status to Paused (temporarily off).
- Click Save Changes.
Pausing overrides the calendar window and switches the discount off without deleting it. Set it back to Active to resume, as long as the window has not passed. Bringing the Ends date forward to now has the same effect and is a better choice if you never want the sale back.
Edit a discount
- Click the Edit discount (pencil) action on the row.
- Change any field, including the scope and the competitions or tags assigned to it.
- Click Save Changes. A "Discount updated" message confirms it.
Changes apply straight away to new baskets and checkouts. Orders already placed are never re-priced and keep the discount they were charged.
If the panel comes back with "Discount details saved, but updating its scope failed", the name, value, window and status did save but the competition or tag assignment may not have. Reopen the discount, check the Applies to section, and save again.
Delete a discount
- Click the Delete discount (bin) action on the row.
- The confirmation reads "Delete [name]? It will stop applying immediately. This cannot be undone." Click Delete.
The discount stops applying at once and disappears from the list. Orders that already used it keep the discount recorded in their history, so your past figures are unaffected.
Hide the discount badge on competition cards
While a discount is live, its customer label shows as a coloured badge on the competition cards. To turn that off across your whole site:
- Go to Admin → Settings and open the Appearance tab.
- Scroll to Competition Card Badges.
- Untick Discount.
- Save the settings.
This only hides the badge. The discounted price still applies at checkout. See Settings for the other card badges.
How discounts differ from early bird and promo codes
Your site has three separate ways to reduce a price. They coexist and never interfere with each other.
| Offer | Set where | How the customer gets it | Reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early bird | On one competition | Automatic | That competition only, and it can end on a ticket threshold |
| Promo code | Promo Codes | The customer types a code at checkout | Whatever the code's own rules allow |
| Discount (this page) | This page | Automatic | Many competitions at once, bounded by a calendar window, never by a ticket threshold |
Reach for a discount when you want a catalogue-wide sale, such as "20% off everything this bank holiday weekend". Reach for early bird when you want to reward the fastest buyers on a single competition.
How overlapping offers are settled
A competition can sit inside more than one discount at the same time, for example a tag discount on tech and a specific-competition discount that both cover it, or an "all competitions" sale running alongside a targeted one. That is allowed and is never an error.
Only one discount is ever applied to a ticket, and the rules are:
- The bigger saving wins. There is no "specific beats tag" rule. If you need a particular discount to take precedence, make sure its saving is the larger one, or pause the competing discount. The form repeats this rule under the Applies to options as a reminder.
- If two discounts happen to give exactly the same saving, the older one is used, so the badge and the price stay consistent from the competition page through to checkout.
- Against the other offer types, the customer always gets the best price. On an exact tie, a quantity (bulk) discount beats a catalogue discount, and a catalogue discount beats early bird.
- A promo code stacks on top of whichever automatic offer won. It does not replace it.
Who can manage discounts
Discounts are open to Admin, Shop Manager and Marketing accounts, with full create, edit and delete access for all three. They carry no customer financial or personal data, which is why Marketing is included.
Troubleshooting
My discount says Active but nothing is discounted. Check the Status column on the list rather than the setting inside the panel. A discount whose status is Active but whose window has not opened reads Upcoming, and one whose window has closed reads Ended. Neither is applying.
The scope says "No scope". The discount is set to specific competitions or tags but nothing has been picked, so it covers no competitions. Open it and add competitions or tags under Applies to.
I set a discount but customers still see the old price on one competition. Another offer gave a bigger saving on that competition, so it won. Check the competition's early bird and quantity break settings, and any other discount covering it.
The panel says "Percentage discount must be between 1 and 99". Percentages cannot be 100 or more. If you want free tickets, use a fixed amount larger than the ticket price instead, and scope it tightly.
The panel says "Fixed-amount discount must be greater than zero". Enter an amount above £0, or switch the Type to Percentage.
The panel says "End date must be after start date". The Ends value is at or before Starts. The date fields limit each other, so clear one and re-pick it.
The panel says "Select at least one competition" or "Select at least one tag". You chose a scoped Applies to option without picking anything. Add at least one, or switch back to All competitions.
I can't see the Create Discount button. Your account has read access but not write access to discounts. Ask whoever manages admin roles to adjust your permissions.
I opened an existing discount and the competition picker was empty for a second. The panel opens instantly from the list row and then fetches the full assignment. Wait for the chips to appear before saving, otherwise you may save an empty scope over a real one.
